Definition of Commonly Used Terms
Is the College recognized by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities as a private career college?
We are registered as a private career college under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005.
What are the admission requirements to enrol as a student?
Admission requirements are set out in the legislation that governs private career colleges. Our admissions requirements reflect those outlined in the legislation.
To be eligible to enrol in our Salesperson Registration Education Program, you must meet the following criteria:
- have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent – OR –
- be at least 18 years of age and successfully complete the College's Admissions Test (the passing mark is 50 per cent)

I have a university degree from outside Canada. Will the College accept this for enrolment in the program?
If you have a university degree from outside Canada, we will accept you into our Salesperson Registration Education Program if you have any of the following (considered equivalent to an Ontario Secondary School Diploma):
- a secondary school graduation diploma or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate from the United States
- a transcript, diploma, or certificate from a country other than Canada or the United States, assessed at an Ontario Secondary School Diploma-level by a recognized assessment service such as World Education Services (WES)
- a post-secondary diploma or degree from the United States
- a post-secondary diploma or degree from a country other than Canada or the United States that has been assessed as equivalent to a Canadian post-secondary diploma or degree by a recognized assessment service such as WES
What kinds of questions are on the College Admissions Test?
The admissions test consists of 50 real estate-focused multiple-choice questions that test basic English comprehension and mathematics. A real estate background is not a prerequisite for this test.
How long will it take to get my registration as a salesperson?
To register as a salesperson with the Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO), you must:
- successfully complete the Pre-registration courses within 18 months of the start date of Real Estate as a Professional Career (the first course in the Salesperson Registration Education Program)
- obtain employment with a registered brokerage and make application for registration with RECO within 12 months of completing the Pre-registration courses
You may begin trading in real estate upon obtaining salesperson registration with RECO.
Why must I go through the admissions process if I took your courses in the past?
You are required to meet our admissions requirements only if you have not already done so. This is a requirement under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005.

What is the process to for being admitted to the Salesperson Registration Education Program, and how do I enrol in the real estate courses?
Once you have met our admission requirements, you will be required to read and accept the terms of our enrolment contract. If you meet the admissions requirements but are not yet 18 years old, a parent or legal guardian must sign the contract on your behalf.
Once this process is completed, you may enrol online, by telephone, or in person, as follows:
- go to www.orea.com, log in to My Portfolio, click on the Buy Courses option and select the first course (Real Estate as a Professional Career), and then complete the enrolment process online
- telephone our customer service line at 416-391-6732 or toll free at 1-866-411-6732
- visit our office (99 Duncan Mill Rd., Don Mills, Ontario)
How do I check the availability of courses?
We post all course information, including class schedules, on our website. On the home page, under OREA Real Estate College, click Course Calendar and then select the Course(s), Study Method, Class Location and Start Date.
What is the My Portfolio account?
My Portfolio is the most important section of the College website. You will receive a password-protected account when you enrol in the first course. We will post all communication to you in your My Portfolio account, such as enrolment confirmation, confirmation of examination location and date, marks and transcripts upon course completion, and tax receipts.
Why are course schedules listed on the website and not included in the Student Handbook?
We schedule courses across the province in advance. To accommodate demand, we often add additional sessions. As a result, any printed course schedule becomes out of date. We post the most current course schedules on our website (www.orea.com).
Can I be added into a fully enrolled class?
No. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. To deliver a high-quality educational experience to all students, we limit classroom attendance. Once a class is full, no additional enrolments are permitted.
I am enrolled in a course. Am I guaranteed a seat in the subsequent course?
You must meet course prerequisites at the time of enrolment. You cannot reserve a seat in subsequent courses before successfully completing the prerequisite course in which you are currently enrolled.
What is the difference between The Real Estate Transaction–General and either The Residential Real Estate Transaction or The Commercial Real Estate Transaction?
The Real Estate Transaction–General takes you from the listing agreement to the final sale. This course emphasizes representation agreements, in particular the agreement of purchase and sale, including how to draft offers and offer negotiations.
The Residential Real Estate Transaction and The Commercial Real Estate Transaction focus on the trading of different types of property, namely current trends and issues that impact residential and commercial real estate, respectively.
What happens if I fail a course?
You have two opportunities to write an examination. The passing mark is 75 per cent. If you fail the examination on your first attempt, you may apply to take a re-write examination. There is a $50 non-refundable fee to re-write an examination. If you fail the re-write examination, you must repeat the course. We automatically re-check examination results close to the passing mark before posting them to your My Portfolio account.

Methods of Delivery
What is the difference between e-Learning and correspondence courses?
Both methods involve self-directed learning. With respect to e-Learning courses, you access material, and complete readings and exercises via the Internet. With respect to correspondence courses, you receive course textbooks by mail and complete the readings, assignments, and exercises.
If you require assistance with course content, contact our Instructor Support Line at 1-866-444-5557 (open Monday to Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.), or access the online Education Forums by logging in to My Portfolio. You may post questions on the forum, answered by other students or the Forum's moderator.
When do I receive my course materials?
If you enrol in person, you may pick up the course materials immediately. If you enrol online or by telephone, you will receive the materials within three to five business days after enrolment. Delivery times vary depending on the destination.
Can I transfer to a classroom course if I originally enrolled in the correspondence method of course delivery?
You may transfer among methods of course delivery only prior to the start date of the course. A $50 transfer fee will apply.
Why do I have to choose a start date for e-Learning/correspondence courses?
You must choose a start date for e-Learning/correspondence courses due to the timeline to complete the Pre-registration courses of the Salesperson Registration Education Program. You must complete the Pre-registration segment within 18 months from the start date of the first course, Real Estate as a Professional Career.
If you are enrolled in The Real Estate Transaction–General, you have approximately 30 days from the start date to complete the e-Learning or correspondence portion of this course. You may then enrol in either The Residential Real Estate Transaction or The Commercial Real Estate Transaction classroom session.
I took Real Estate as a Professional Career by correspondence. Do I have to send any proof of completion to the College before taking my examination?
We expect you to complete all readings, exercises, and assignments prior to writing the examination for the course. No submissions are required.
Why do I have to attend classroom sessions for The Residential Real Estate Transaction or The Commercial Real Estate Transaction?
You are required to attend classroom sessions for selected courses in the program to maximize learning of the course curriculum. The Residential Real Estate Transaction and The Commercial Real Estate Transaction courses focus on trading different types of property, and current trends and issues that impact residential and commercial real estate.
Your success as a salesperson depends on your ability to prepare diverse agreements of purchase and sale, including the many terms and conditions that usually comprise such agreements.

Why are more courses offered in certain areas of the province, such as Toronto and Ottawa, and fewer in Northern Ontario?
We schedule courses based on student/registrant demand in each area of the province, and make every effort to provide courses province-wide.
Why are evening courses offered only in Toronto?
We offer evening classes in Toronto and Brampton, where there is a high student/registrant demand.
How are course schedules at each location in the province determined?
We plan our course schedules in consultation with local real estate boards, and add sessions based on demonstrated demand.

Do you have wait lists? How do I get on a wait list?
We have a wait-list process to monitor demand for additional sessions. To assess demand, you must first enrol in a scheduled course and then we will put you on a wait list. If there is sufficient demand, we may schedule an additional session. We will contact and offer you a seat in the new session. However, you should be prepared to attend the session in which you are enrolled if an additional session is not offered.

What is the total fee for courses in the Salesperson Registration Education Program?
The total fee for courses in the Salesperson Registration Education Program is $3,355. The breakdown is as follows:
Pre-registration courses: $ 2,850
Articling courses: $ 505
Course fees include all required materials and are subject to change. Please review the Courses and Fees page of our website for current course fees.
Is financial assistance available to cover course fees?
We do not provide financial assistance to cover real estate education courses.
I haven’t received a receipt for my courses. Can I obtain one?
We post official income tax receipts to your My Portfolio account.

Can I enrol in a subsequent course before getting my marks for the prerequisite course?
You must first pass the prerequisite course examination before being eligible to enrol in the subsequent course.
When does my two-year Articling period end?
The two-year Articling period ends on the second anniversary of your initial registration as a salesperson with RECO.
What is the next step after completing the Pre-registration segment of the Salesperson Registration Education Program?
You have one year to obtain employment with a brokerage and apply to RECO for registration as a salesperson following completion of the Pre-registration segment. Once registered as a salesperson, you have two years to complete the required Articling course and apply to RECO for renewal of your salesperson registration.
Why do I have only 12 months to register with RECO after completing my Pre-registration courses?
The 12-month requirement is set out in the Real Estate and Business Brokers Act, 2002 (REBBA 2002).
Why do I have to wait one month after the start of The Real Estate Transaction–General (self- study) before taking the one-week classroom session?
The course content is comprehensive and an understanding of the curriculum is critical to your success in either The Residential Real Estate Transaction or The Commercial Real Estate Transaction. We give you sufficient time to ensure you have reviewed and understood the curriculum, and are prepared for the advanced classroom session.
May I request a course extension?
You must complete all courses within the specified time frames. You must complete the Pre-registration courses (including all initial and re-write examinations) within 18 months of the original start date of Real Estate as a Professional Career.
If you are unable to complete all courses in the Pre-registration segment within the 18-month time frame because of personal health reasons, you must advise us in writing and provide the required medical documentation. What will happen if I am unable to register with RECO within one year after Pre-registration?
You must apply for registration as a salesperson to RECO within the specified time frame. Please contact RECO (416-207-4800, 1-800-245-6910, firstname.lastname@example.org) if you are unable to apply for registration within the one-year time frame.
When can I start selling?
You may begin trading in real estate once you have received salesperson registration with RECO.
How quickly can I complete all Pre-registration courses?
You may complete the courses as quickly as you wish, scheduling permitting. However, you have up to 18 months to complete all Pre-registration courses.
What if I did not complete the three Articling courses within the first two years I am registered?
If you do not complete the Articling course within the first two years of registration, you will not be permitted to continue trading in real estate. Please contact RECO for additional information.

Why do I have to choose my examination date at the time of enrolment?
Given that thousands of examinations are written annually, selecting an examination date at the time of enrolment enables us to effectively schedule examination dates and helps you plan your study time.
Can I reschedule my examination?
Following initial enrolment, requests to reschedule an examination will be subject to a $50 non-refundable administration fee for each request.
Requests to reschedule the examination must be made a minimum of 10 calendar days before the desired examination date.
You may contact the College and reschedule an examination up to the close of business the day before the currently scheduled date.
If you do not write your scheduled examination, you will be given a mark of ‘0’, the course transcript will reflect ‘Fail’, and an examination attempt will be lost.
If you arrive past the scheduled examination date start time or without proper identification, you will not be permitted to write the examination and you will be required to reschedule. However, an examination attempt will not be lost.
Can I write my examination earlier than the initially scheduled date?
Yes, you may request an earlier examination date. If you are a classroom student, however, you cannot request an examination date before completion of the course. Please notify us at least 10 calendar days before the desired examination date. A $50 administration fee will apply.
Why can’t I request a specific time of day for an examination?
We schedule examinations on a first-come, first-serve basis, and based on the number of spaces available at a given examination centre on any given date.
When are examinations offered?
We schedule examinations on Saturdays in examination centres province-wide. We also schedule examinations on weekdays at the College's Don Mills location. In addition, iPad exams are held on select weekdays at several real estate boards.
Does the College maintain a waiting list for examinations?
No. Due to the volume of examinations scheduled and written, and the logistics of printing and shipping examinations to examination centres province-wide, spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Can you give me any preparation tips for my upcoming examination?
You are encouraged to:
- review all course materials, including quizzes
- take advantage of our online resources, such as course-related forums on the College website (www.orea.com) in the My OREA Community (discussion forum for classes) section of My Portfolio
- become familiar with the examination format as described in the online examination information booklet, also located in My Portfolio

How long are the examinations? What is the format?
Each examination is three hours long and consists of multiple choice questions based on the learning outcomes of course curriculum and levels of competency.
Should I bring extra paper to the examination to do calculations?
You are only permitted to bring a calculator that does not save text to the examination. Do rough work directly on the examination booklet.
I have special needs. Can I be accommodated?
If you have special needs, you may request special accommodations and arrangements, which we review on a case-by-case basis. You can find more information about our college’s Accommodations Policy under the Things You Should Know section of the website.
Are conversion tables provided for examinations?
Where required, we provide conversion factors, formulas, and samples of standard forms.
What ID must I bring to the examination centre?
You must bring a current and valid identification (ID) to the examination centre. The ID must be issued by a government agency, and the name must be identical to the name provided in the student information section of your student enrolment contract.
How quickly can I get my examination results and where can I find them?
We will post your examination results on the Completed Courses section of your My Portfolio account (www.orea.com) within five to seven business days after writing the examination.
What happens if I cannot attend a scheduled examination due to an emergency?
You must advise us immediately if you are unable to attend a scheduled examination due to an emergency. You must inform us in writing and provide supporting documentation regarding the emergency, such as a Student Medical Certificate completed by a regulated health professional. The form is available on the Health Issues page of our website, in the Things You Should Know section. We will review each scenario on a case-by-case basis.
Why can’t I reschedule my examination with less than 10 days' notice?
We print and ship individualized examinations to examination centres province-wide. We require a notice of 10 calendar days to ensure you are on the examination schedule and your examination arrives on time.
I know requests to reschedule require a minimum of 10 days' notice, but my registration is in jeopardy. Can I write the examination in the next few days?
We make every reasonable effort to accommodate students, but cannot guarantee we will be able to meet your request.
If I failed an examination twice and need to re-enrol, is there a discounted fee?
Course fees are not discounted.
Does the examination prepare me for the real world of real estate?
Administered on behalf of RECO, the examination covers the requisite knowledge and competencies necessary to succeed in real estate, and supports RECO’s mandate to protect the interest of consumers.
To be successful, you must first know and comply with the regulations. Inadequate knowledge of the regulations presents a clear and present danger to consumers. For example, it is your responsibility to properly prepare a representation agreement that protects the public interest, not your marketing prowess in obtaining the listing in the first place.
Who determines the subject areas included in the examination?
The content of the examination is based on actual activities/tasks a real estate professional would be required to perform his/her duties as a real estate salesperson, in a manner that protects the interests of consumers.
As part of our accreditation process, we work closely with RECO to ensure the courses and examinations reflect the current real estate environment, and supports RECO's mandate of regulating real estate activities in the public interest.
I failed the examination twice and it is because there were too many trick questions. This isn't fair.
Our examination questions test comprehension of specific course content. The questions are fair.
I’ve been told that there are several versions of the examination and that if I fail on the first attempt, I would take a different version on the second attempt. Is this true?
There are several versions of the examination. Each individual writes a unique examination, but the examinations are the same in terms of function and validity. All examinations have the same number of questions, cover the same subject areas, and have the same level of difficulty.
I heard the registration examination has a high failure rate. Is this true?
No. Pass rates reflect students’ successful study efforts, including completion of the practice quizzes in course textbooks, classroom/Internet discussions, and the use of examination study aids. Course and examination study aids are available for purchase. You can find more information about them in the Learning Tools section of our website.
In addition, you have access to our publication entitled “Multiple Choice Examinations – What you can expect,” which outlines the varying levels of difficulty, the number of questions from each level of difficulty that will be included on the examination, and sample questions for each level of difficulty. Becoming a Real Estate Broker
What courses do I need to become a Broker?
You must successfully complete the Broker Registration Education Program. To be eligible to enrol in the Real Estate Broker Course, you must first successfully complete the Salesperson Registration Education Program (Pre-registration and Articling segments), plus one additional elective course.
If you have not successfully completed Phase 3 Commercial, you must take The Commercial Real Estate Transaction as the additional elective course.

How do I file a formal complaint?
The first step is to telephone us to resolve any outstanding questions and/or concerns. If the concern is not resolved, the next step is submitting a written complaint to the Administrator, Student and Faculty Services. The College Student Complaint Procedure is documented in the Student Enrolment Contract and, in addition, will be provided upon request.
How do I get my registration education transcript(s)?
We post education transcripts and other communications to your My Portfolio account on our website (www.orea.com).
What is the purpose of A Mentoring Kit for New Salespeople: Training for Success?
A Mentoring Kit for New Salespeople: Training for Success is designed to provide new registrants with the ‘soft skills' necessary to transition from the classroom to the day-to-day business of trading in real estate. The kit includes three DVDs and a series of booklets.
“How Real Estate is Structured in Ontario” highlights the benefits and services provided by organized real estate. “Sales Training for New Salespeople” takes the viewer through interviews with salespeople and details many of the skills requisite to a successful career in real estate. Topics include business planning, time management, professionalism, prospecting techniques, and the strategies one may employ to convert ‘For Sale by Owners' signs to listings. The videos highlight and reinforce topics covered in detail in the booklets.
Brokers may use this kit as an effective training tool for newly registered salespeople.

RECO and Registration Requirements
What are the prerequisites for becoming registered as a salesperson?
To be registered as a salesperson with RECO and trade in real estate in Ontario, you must:
- be a resident of Canada
- be at least 18 years of age
- obtain employment with a registered brokerage and apply for registration within one year of successfully completing the last Pre-registration segment course
- complete and submit the forms approved by the Registrar under REBBA 2002, accompanied by the relevant fee

If I change brokerages, is my registration still valid?

If I filed for bankruptcy, can I get a real estate registration?
The Registrar reviews and evaluates all applications for registration as a salesperson on a case-by-case basis. You must communicate your personal circumstances to RECO. Please contact RECO for additional information.
If I had a licence cancellation in any other profession, can I still apply for salesperson registration?
You may apply, but acceptance is not guaranteed. The Registrar reviews all applications on an individual basis. Please contact RECO for additional information.
Where can I find my registration renewal date?
The registration expiry date is printed on the Certificate of Registration issued by RECO.
