Q8. I have a trip scheduled soon. How can I learn more about the ORWP Travel Insurance coverage options and access this benefit now?

  • The ORWP Standard Plan includes out-of-country/province emergency medical coverage for you (the Member) for trips with a maximum duration of 30 days per trip, with a $2,000,000 lifetime maximum. The Enhanced, Elite, and Super Elite Plans include coverage with a maximum trip duration of 60 days per trip. The travel insurance terminates at age 80.

  • If you are leaving for a trip on or after January 1, 2024, but before you complete your online enrollment in the ORWP, you will need to complete the pre-enrollment process to access your travel insurance card. Please email programadministrator@orwp.ca for additional information where applicable. You will need to complete a pre-enrollment form and provide proof of payment of your Membership dues prior to receiving a card.

Q9. Are dental and vision included in the Standard Plan?

  • The REALTOR® Wellness Task Force chose to not include dental and vision in the Standard Plan in order to keep the premium as low as possible.
  • However, dental and vision coverage are included in the optional Plans.

Q10. To what degree is mental health covered, as well as prescription drugs for mental illness?

  • The Member Virtual Care and Mental Health Program will make finding help easier. The Program delivers whole-person care and a personalized approach to Members’ mental wellbeing.
  • Members can access services by self-selecting a therapist or social worker based on their needs and availability, often in under 12 hours, which is the fastest access across the industry.
  • Members can continue to see the same therapist to help support them through their mental health journey.
  • There are also resources available to support proactive wellness, customized to Members’ needs.
  • The Standard Plan will also provide Members with $750 per calendar year to go toward prescription drugs.

Q11. Does the Standard Plan cover Members when they are out of province?

  • Yes, the travel insurance provides Members with Out-of-Province and Out-of-Country Emergency Medical Travel Insurance for trips up to 30 consecutive days, until age 80, with a $2,000,000 lifetime maximum.
  • Members are provided with the option to enhance their coverage at a later date, which will include coverage for trips of more than 30 days.

Q12. Do we have a number for what this coverage is worth if Members were to use it all?

  • For healthcare alone, which includes prescription drugs capped at $750, paramedical practitioners capped at $750, and medical supplies capped at $500, this coverage is worth $2,000. This amount does not include benefits covered under the accident dental and ambulance coverage.
  • Yet, Members will only be charged $659.88.
  • In addition, there is Life Insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance, Critical Illness Insurance, Out-of-Country Emergency Medical Travel Insurance, and a Member Virtual Care and Mental Health Program, which are all valuable benefits.

Q13. How is this plan comparable to other plans? What does the typical premium cost?

  • The ORWP is a custom plan which was developed with the Program Administrator, CBS, to be a group program, which means participation in the program is a condition of membership.
  • While there is no “direct comparison” per se, there are plans in the marketplace that provide similar coverage to individuals and are available on a voluntary basis.
  • If a Member sought out comparable healthcare coverage (prescriptions, paramedical practitioners, medical services and supplies, etc.) on their own from another provider, it would cost $1,000 per year for a 40-year-old Member, $1,100 for a 50-year-old, $1,400 for 60- and 70-year-olds, and $1,800 for an 80-year-old1.

Q14. Can I enhance the coverage offered under the Standard Plan?

  • Yes, Members are able to customize their coverage to meet the specific needs of their families. There are a variety of options that allow them to add dental care, vision care, life insurance, and more, all at competitive pricing.
  • Members interested in enhancing their Standard Plan coverage can do so during the pre-approved enrollment period, from January 1, 2024, to February 29, 2024. Following this period, Members cannot adjust their coverage levels until the next enrollment period in 2025.

Q15. Can any parts of this plan be converted to an individual plan on retirement or leaving the industry?

If you have Life Insurance and healthcare coverage through the ORWP Standard Plan and decide to end your OREA membership or retire without enrolling in the ORWP Retirement plan, you may consider the following coverage conversion privileges without providing medical evidence:

  • Transition your Life Insurance with Canada Life to an individual plan, within 31 days of your ORWP insurance terminating or reducing. The forms required to transition your Life Insurance plan can be found here.
  • Choose one of the three “Guaranteed Acceptance” individual healthcare plans provided by Green Shield Canada, within 90 days of your ORWP insurance termination. Click here to learn more about each plan and to compare their benefits. Please note that coverage may differ from ORWP Plans.
  • Please reach out to ProgramAdministrator@orwp.ca if you have any questions.

Q16. What happens when I turn 65? Will I remain eligible for insurance coverage? What about when I turn 80?

  • Eligible Members under age 65 will be covered for $100,000 of Life Insurance. The coverage continues past age 65 at $50,000 and remains at that level until retirement, no matter what age that happens.
  • Eligible Members under age 65 will be covered for $25,000 of Critical Insurance. The coverage continues from age 65 to 70 at $12,500. At age 70, their coverage terminates.
  • Eligible Members under age 80 will be covered for trips up to 30 consecutive days with a $2,000,000 lifetime maximum through the Out-of-Country Emergency Medical Travel Insurance. At age 80, their coverage terminates.
  • Coverage for all other benefits (Healthcare, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, and the Member Virtual Care and Mental Health Program) continues for all eligible Members without any reduction or termination due to age.

Q17. I am single, no children or heirs, why do I need life insurance?

  • The ORWP should be viewed in its entirety. Life insurance is only part of the plan. There are many elements of the coverage that are of practical use to Members, such as Critical Illness Insurance, Out-of-Country Emergency Medical Travel Insurance, and healthcare (prescriptions, paramedical practitioners, medical services and supplies, etc.)
  • We’re all one stroke of bad luck away from our lives being turned upside down.
  • Assistance during trying times to cover unexpected challenges, such as funeral costs, support for family members, and covering debts, will be beneficial.

Q18. How does the ORWP Travel Insurance compare to the credit card travel insurance?

  • Emergency medical travel is typically included with upgraded fee-based credit cards, with annual fees that can range from $120 - $699. The Out-of-Country Emergency Medical Travel Insurance through the ORWP is more comprehensive.
  • With credit cards, the trip durations are limited, commonly ranging from 15 to 25 days, and most either exclude coverage from those aged 65 or older or limit the duration to 3 days.
  • For example, a credit card from a large Canadian institution that offers travel insurance doesn’t cover those aged 65+, but those clients can purchase an optional 31-day plan for an annual fee of $249 for ages 65-69, or $349 for those aged 70-74.
  • The ORWP covers Members under 80 years of age, and it doesn’t require purchases to be made with a particular credit card for the coverage to apply.

Family Plans

Q1. Can I add my family members to the insurance plan?

  • Yes.
  • The Program took effect on January 1, 2024, with an option for REALTOR® family members, Board/Association staff, and Brokerage staff to join the Program at an additional cost to be paid directly to the insurance carriers and managed by Comprehensive Benefit Solutions.

Optional Plans

Q1. What are the optional plans?

  • The ORWP provides additional options for Members looking for enhanced coverage at their own expense, the Enhanced, Elite, and Super Elite plans.
  • These plans include coverage options for dental and vision, in addition to increased coverage for other components included in the Standard Plan.
  • For more information and details, view the Optional Plan (Member login required).

Q2. What is the difference between the ORWP Standard Plan and the optional plans?

  • Effective January 1, 2024, participation in the ORWP’s Standard Plan is a benefit of OREA membership, supported by OREA Member Dues.
  • The optional plans are available on a voluntary basis for those wishing to upgrade their coverage.
  • There is an additional cost for the optional plans that is not included within OREA Dues and is paid directly to the Program Administrator, CBS, who will remit it to the insurance carrier(s) on your behalf.

The insurance company will assess whether an illness is covered at the time of claims.
