RECO reports high rate of renewal

The cost of home ownership in Ontario rose to 31 percent of pre-tax household income needed to carry a home

The cost of home ownership in Ontario rose to 31 percent of pre-tax household income needed to carry a home, in the third quarter of 2003 from 30.4 per cent in the second quarter, according to the RBC Economics Housing Affordability Index. This translates into a monthly payment of $1,387 for an average detached bungalow (principal, interest, tax and utilities).

The increase was caused by a relatively tight housing market and a slight rise in mortgage rates, which saw existing home sales grow at a record pace.
