No new fees, OREA says

OREA took a stand to keep costs low and standards high in its submission to the Real Estate Council of Ontario in response to the Council’s plan to restructure its Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE) program.

OREA took a stand to keep costs low and standards high in its submission to the Real Estate Council of Ontario in response to the Council’s plan to restructure its Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE) program.

In May, OREA President Tamer Fahmi submitted a response to the RECO document “Restructuring the RECO MCE Program– A Consultation Paper for Registrants and Education Providers,” criticizing the proposed $5 fee on registrants per MCE course taken. The fee, the submission says, “is contrary to the key principle of the MCE program: namely that of providing open and easy access to courses for all registrants.” And while the fee might not deter real estate professionals from improving their skills “it will certainly flatten motivation.”

The submission also took issue with RECO’s suggestion  for a new reporting process , noting that the OREA Card is designed to collect and maintain MCE course credit information that members and registrants can access anytime, on-line, via the OREA website. OREA has invited RECO to conduct a due diligence review of the OREA Card system, with a view to avoiding redundancies.

RECO’s effort to set minimum quality standards with regards to instructor qualifications and course materials was applauded, and OREA expressed confidence in its ability to meet and exceed those standards. OREA highlighted the recognition of its standards by other real estate education bodies (see OREA NEWS “OREA sets pace for instructors.”) The submission affirmed that RECO should act only as the MCE Program’s governing body, and leave course development, delivery and administration to education providers.

OREA also supported RECO’s plan to encourage “controlled competition” as a method of consumer protection.
