Governance reviews OREA's next chapter

Change is on the way for Ontario’s Realtors, as OREA and its members chart a new future for the association following Governance Day at the annual conference.

Governance reviews OREA's next chapterChange is on its way for Ontario’s 70,000 REALTORS®. Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) President Ettore Cardarelli, Immediate Past-President Ray Ferris, Governance Committee Chair Costa Poulopoulos and CEO Tim Hudak addressed a packed room of more than 300 OREA members at the OREA Governance Day on February 28.

The event explored a fresh direction for the association and took place at Toronto’s Sheraton Centre as part of the OREA annual conference. Hudak discussed the importance of respecting members’ dues, doubling down on government relations, building on the strength of the association’s products and services, and giving members the tools to help Ontarians achieve their dreams of home ownership.

“The Board of Directors hired me to shake things up at OREA,” Hudak told members at the annual general meeting. “This 95-year old professional association has been helping Realtors do their jobs for a long time. But from what I learned in my first three months on the job, is that Ontario Realtors are ready for change. They want an association that is more nimble in decision making and is going to fight harder to help Realtors help Ontarians achieve their dream of home ownership.”

“Change is on its way for Ontario’s 70,000 REALTORS®.”

Participating Realtors from all across Ontario heard during the session that OREA will be focusing on priorities such as government relations and leadership training, reducing administrative costs and turning up the volume on issues of importance to Realtors and Ontario home owners, buyers and sellers.

“Realtors help first-time buyers, young families, downsizers with buying and selling homes on a daily basis – as far as real estate is concerned, we know what keeps them up at night,” said Cardarelli. “That’s why, going forward, OREA and its members will continue to advocate on behalf of Ontario’s home owners. It is our mission to be the unapologetic defender of home ownership in the province.”

“The pace of change in today’s real estate industry is rapid,” said Ferris. “In order to provide the best service to their clients, Realtors need to stay ahead of the curve. OREA’s fresh approach is simply our way of making sure that our members have the tools they need to help make Ontarians’ dreams of home ownership a reality.”

Four position papers were made available to members to provide background for the meeting. Although governance refers to an organization’s structure and bylaws, this review also looked at decision-making. The following questions were among those discussed:

  • Who are our “members” and who do we serve?
  • How do we engage with members, and how do members want to be engaged?
  • What are the most critical things that members need and that OREA is in the best position to provide?
  • How does the board function, how is it composed, and how can it be more effective?
  • How can we ensure that the relationship between management and the board is collaborative and high-performing?
