OREA Government Relations department wins CSAE Award

For its successful campaign against the Ontario government’s proposed mandatory energy audits, OREA was awarded the CSAE’s 2010 Associations Make a Better Canada Award in the Public Affairs/Government Relations category.

For its successful campaign against the Ontario government’s proposed mandatory energy audits, OREA was awarded the CSAE’s 2010 Associations Make a Better Canada Award in the Public Affairs/Government Relations category. Thanks to OREA’s efforts, Bill 150 was first amended to allow homeowners to waive the audit and then stopped altogether, saving thousands of dollars in potential lost equity and forced retrofit renovations.

The campaign included a comprehensive media strategy, a REALTOR® Call for Action (CFA), appearances by three local real estate boards before the Standing Committee on General Government (SCGG) during hearings on Bill 150, an issue summary, organized meetings with specific elected officials and civil servants as well as a study of consumer attitudes towards mandatory home energy audits which were shared with officials in the Premier’s Office and Ministry of Energy.

More than 15,000 CFA emails from REALTORS® and consumers were sent to MPPs in opposition to Bill 150. The campaign also resulted in over 30 articles published in major news outlets and local papers, 12 media interviews by the OREA President and Staff Directors, four presentations to the SCGG in opposition to Bill 150 and over 20 references to MHEA and OREA in the legislature including two questions to the Premier and Minister of Energy.
