WIRED OFFICE: Put two numbers on one cell phone

If you are one of those people who carries two cell phones – one for business and one for personal use – you may be happy to hear about a relatively new offering from Rogers Wireless called Second Voice Line Service (SVLS).

If you are one of those people who carries two cell phones – one for business and one for personal use – you may be happy to hear about a relatively new offering from Rogers Wireless called Second Voice Line Service (SVLS).

This new service gives small-to-medium business customers the advantage of having two phone numbers on one cell phone so they can conduct business over one line, and personal calls over the other. Also, subscribers to SVLS will be able to access all the wireless features they have on their primary line – including Call Display, Name Display, Who Called, Enhanced Voice Mail, Call Manager and Voice Mail – directly on their second line at no extra cost. There’s also no monthly System Administration Fee or monthly 911 Emergency Service Access Fee for the second line. So, if you currently have two phones and two plans, this could result in significant cost savings. According to Rogers, you could save up to 49 per cent every month off the cost of your second wireless line.

SVLS can be helpful for those road warriors who conduct business in more than one area code, as the second line can be given a different Canadian area code than the primary line. This added benefit will make it more convenient to conduct business remotely while helping to reduce long-distance costs. People with one or more businesses can also save by dedicating a line to each business.

How it works
The handset identifies which line is receiving a call, with the screen displaying a "1" or a "2" when a call is received. With some devices, the display can be customized as well. To make calls on either line, the user simply selects which line they want to make a call with from the handset’s menu, and then dials. Once a line is selected, it will remain the active outgoing line until it is changed to the other line.

However, you cannot put one line on hold while using the other. If your line is in use, the incoming call from the other line will go directly to voicemail. If you do not have voicemail, the caller will hear a busy signal. But, if you are using one line, and a second call comes in to the same line, your call waiting will function normally.

SVLS subscribers also have the benefit of a consolidated voice mail box. If a subscriber has voice mail on their primary line, their secondary line will automatically receive voice mail at no additional cost. A shared voice mail box is created to accommodate both lines simultaneously. Each line has its own unique recorded message, but subscribers, only need to make one call to retrieve all their messages. Similarly, your phone has only one text messaging inbox. This means all text messages will be received in the same inbox and all outgoing text messages will be sent and billed to your primary voice line number. However, text messages cannot be sent from your second voice line number. As for Internet access, when you log on to the browser on your phone, your primary line will be used by default. All billable data usage (such as content downloads, chat, etc.) will be charged to your primary voice line number.

So far, Rogers Wireless is the only carrier in Canada to offer this service. SVLS is available on more than 120 devices from 10 handset manufacturers through Rogers including the BlackBerry Curve, the Treo 650 and 680 and all currently sold Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson handsets. SVLS price plans range from $20 per month ($20 Anytime Plan with 200 Anytime Minutes) to $30 per month ($30 Mega Time plan with unlimited network calling and unlimited evenings and weekend calling). For a limited time, the regular $35 activation fee will be waived on Second Voice Line Service for more information contact your nearest Rogers Wireless retailer, or visit www.rogers.com/secondvoiceline.
