Do you need a PDA?

What's a PDA and should you have one? PDA stands for Personal Digital Assistant, and is essentially a powerful, hand-held computer. PDA’s are quickly becoming the latest “must have” technology for REALTORS.

The most popular PDA’s available are the PalmPilot and the PocketPC. Both offer similar features and a wide price range depending on those features. Pricing aside, you will need to determine what software will be compatible with your MLS system and your home or office computer. Talk to the PDA expert in your local computer stores for assistance in choosing the correct model for you. Before you run out and buy a PDA here’s a rundown of what you can do with one. As with any new technology purchase, do your homework and comparison shop to get the best deal.

What can a PDA do for you?
REALTORS juggle bits and pieces of information in large quantities on a daily basis. Being able to organize and coordinate all of that information in one small, hand-held source has got to be an efficiency boost. Think about it – phone numbers, contact names, MLS listing information, notes, forms, digital photos, email and more can all be stored in your PDA. Once back in the office you can easily transfer the information to your PC.

Here’s a list of some of the features:

  • Datebook – An electronic organizer where you can store and keep track of appointments, meetings and other important events. It’s a lot smaller than a Daytimer.
  • Memo Pad – Instead of jotting down notes on scraps or paper or even a napkin, you can use the stylus – sort of like a pencil – to write down all those tidbits of information.
  • Address Book – To store all of your important contacts.
  • Email – Lets you send and receive email on a wireless system.

Before you buy a PDA
The best thing to do before you buy one of these new 'toys' is to go to the store and try a few out. Also talk to friends or colleagues who already have a PDA to get their feedback. Learn as much as you can about PDAs. Information abounds on the Internet and many PDA dealers have comparisons online including prices.
