College wins prestigious award

The OREA Real Estate College has won a prestigious educational award for its blended learning curriculum from the Real Estate Educators Association, beating out hundreds of other programs across North America.

REEA Award

The OREA Real Estate College has won a prestigious educational award for its blended learning curriculum from the Real Estate Educators Association, beating out hundreds of other programs across North America.

REEA AwardThe OREA Real Estate College has been honoured by the Real Estate Educators Association (REEA) with the award for Education Program of the Year.

The blended learning curriculum of Real Estate as a Professional Career, the first course in the college’s registration education program, was chosen from hundreds of programs from across North America by REEA, a society of real estate educators.

REEA’s mission is to provide resources and opportunities for professional development to individuals and organizations involved in real estate education. The award recognizes the educational program deemed the most successful effort of the year.

Blended learning has emerged as one of the most prominent delivery mechanisms in all levels of education and a variety of courses.

The college’s blended learning model is unique; it combines customized case studies and reflection questions written by curriculum staff, instructor-facilitated discussions using the Socratic Method, and computer-mediated communication. The case studies are based on key concepts in the textbook and focus on real-world scenarios. The Socratic Method is a student-centred questioning technique that encourages disciplined, thoughtful dialogue and promotes independent thinking. The instructor’s role is to engage in shared dialogue with students and push the dialogue forward using open-ended questions. Computer-mediated communication means that students can access online resources, including relevant videos, in the classroom and on their own time.

“The college adopted this model because flipped learning is simply better,” says executive director Ozzie Logozzo, who spearheaded the college’s blended learning program. “When you flip student’s learning, you time-shift lower level skills, and permit more class time for student engagement in problem-solving that draws out an application, analysis and evaluation skills set. Classroom integration then becomes the pursuit and application of knowledge, rather than an information dump, and students take charge of their own learning. We are delighted REEA has recognized our efforts.”

The REEA Education Program of the Year is the second award the college has received for the blended learning curriculum. Earlier in the year the Learning Resource Network (LERN), the world’s largest association devoted to continuing education and lifelong learning, presented the college with the 2015 LERN International Award for Excellence in Programming. This award is given to programs deemed creative, innovative, and exemplary. This winning program offered by the college was also chosen from hundreds across North America.
