Rules change for reinstatement

As a further sign of a more professional regulatory environment in the real estate industry, a new requirement comes into effect this month.

As a further sign of a more professional regulatory environment in the real estate industry, a new requirement comes into effect this month. As of March 1, 2008, any former registrant who wishes to reinstate must complete the RECO Real Estate Update Course (Residential or Commercial) prior to submitting an application for reinstatement.

This new condition is in addition to the current requirement for reinstating registrants to complete an additional CE credit hour for every month or partial month they were previously registered prior to submitting an application to reinstate.

Only registrants who were previously registered for a period of more than six months in their last registration cycle must complete an additional CE credit for each additional month or partial month that they were registered.

This means that if a former registrant’s registration cycle was from December 13, 2006 to December 13, 2008, and that person’s registration terminated on March 5, 2008, he or she would need to complete the RECO Real Estate Update Course in addition to nine other CE credits prior to submitting an application for reinstatement.

Alternately, if a former registrant’s registration cycle was from November 27, 2007 to November 27, 2009, and that person registration also terminated on March 5, 2008, he or she would need to complete only the RECO Real Estate Update Course.

In order to assist former registrants who may wish to reinstate, RECO’s system-generated letters have been updated to reflect the new requirements. The letters will also clearly outline for each former registrant, how many CE credits are required to reinstate. Going forward, these letters will be sent when the registrants registration is terminated.

In requiring completion of the RECO Real Estate Update course RECO ensures a consistency of education for both applicants for reinstatement and registrants renewing their registration. Registrants needing more information about amendments to the Continuing Education Policy should send e-mail to education@reco.on.ca or download a copy of the policy at www.reco.on.ca.
