Program provides funding to upgrade water wells

How well is the well on that rural property you're listing?

How well is the well on that rural property you're listing? You may want to check into a provincial government program administered by the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) through which rural property owners can receive up to two-thirds of the cost to upgrade or decommission their wells.

The program will not cover the cost of a new well, pump, or treatment system, but it will cover 67 per cent of the cost to fix structural problems on existing wells, or 64 per cent of the cost to cap old wells that are no longer used.

Eligible projects under the program include: · Grading around wells to divert surface water from wellheads · Upgrading or replacing deteriorated well casings · Extending well casings to at least 16 inches above grade · Installation of proper well caps · Water testing (must be done in conjunction with an upgrade or decommission) · Decommissioning of unused wells or wells that were not properly shut down

Funds for the upgrades are provided through the Healthy Futures for Ontario Agriculture program and applications for funding will be accepted until September 2003.

Property owners must complete a six-page well-assessment worksheet outlining the well’s deficiencies. Applicants who receive approval will be required to have the work completed by a licensed well contractor and then submit their claim for reimbursement.

OFA recommends property owners obtain competitive quotes and that they ensure the contractor has a valid license.

For more information and to receive an application form, contact the OFA at 416-485-3333 or visit the OFA web site at www.ofa.on.ca for a list of local federation offices.
