Karen Shartun of the Kitchener-Waterloo Real Estate Board was awarded the OREA Volunteerism Award for an Individual, presented at the 2010 OREA Annual Conference. Karen stepped in to administer the day-to-day business of the board after the sudden departure of the executive officer. She also played a significant leadership role in developing the board’s professionalism, as one of the driving forces behind the board’s very first strategic plan, which resulted in the board’s greater objectives becoming strategic and measurable.

Two boards were recognized for their work training and recruiting volunteers.

The Ottawa Real Estate Board stood out for its innovative efforts to train its volunteers at all levels while making a concerted effort to offer its members meaningful volunteer work.

The REALTORS® Association of Hamilton-Burlington earned praise for a creative, professional and organized volunteer recruitment strategy that has proven to be successful in volunteer recruitment. This board has implemented an effective training and recognition program and provides each volunteer with a comprehensive volunteer orientation package.

The selection committee received more submissions this year than ever before.
